Personal Update
I’ve said this before as a personal update, but repeating it and putting it out to the world helps me force my own change in a direction that I truly want to go in. Simplification. It’s my rule for making decisions for the year in my personal and professional life. As a reminder to myself, this doesn’t mean easy, or less work, but it does mean purposeful and directed. Sometimes I can get caught up in the busyness of the day-to-day work that I need to force myself to step back, slow down, and look at what I am doing vs, where I want to go and when I did that this last time the words “simplify it” kept coming up in my notes. I am just past the halfway mark in the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell and some of the stories and concepts have already proven helpful. Check it out if you haven’t already.
Fantastic Podcast(s) I listened to last week
a16z Podcast: January 6th, 2023- Creators, Creativity, and Technology with Bob Iger
Show Notes: A wide-ranging conversation with Bob Iger on the interplay between technology, content, and distribution; as well as Bob’s journey -- and that of various creators! -- especially as the industry evolved from TV and cable to the advent of the internet/ web 1.0 to 2.0 to briefly touching on web3 and other emerging technologies. As well as topics top of mind for all company and community builders: from build vs. buy and the innovator's dilemma to managing creativity, decentralization, and remote work.
My Thoughts: This is not about fitness at all, but I still think there are some lessons to be learned in our space considering that Bob Iger the CEO at Walt Disney has ushered the company to the powerhouse it is today pretty much since 2005. 2005 is an entirely different world compared to the one we live in today, it was pre-Iphone, Amazon Prime, Youtube & Facebook were still pooping in their diapers, Netflix DVDs were in your mailbox, and MySpace was the ruler of the online social kingdom. The fitness industry tends to slowly follow or adopt trends from other industries and I believe we are still making a turn at how we deliver our services since the forced hand of the pandemic. It’s a worthwhile listen as one of the overall messages he repeats in the episode is a focus on High Quality Content and respecting the viewer. In a world that seems to launch Liver Princes to fame I think we can make a better impact with a collective focus on quality.
