Personal Update
I am extremely excited to be going to my first event of the year in under 30 days! I will be attending the “Raise the Bar Conference” on Feb 24th. I went to the same event last year and met a lot of really awesome people. Of course, the talks were good, but the people meeting part was better. As I work for myself my local interactions are usually with clients, and friends outside of the industry. It will be a refreshing couple of days where I will be surrounded by people just like me. It’s not that I don’t have people here in Miami whom I bounce ideas off of, it’s literally an issue of making time to do it in person. In the event, it will be significantly easier, while at home I am always pulled(by myself) into working on more future projects, that making plans to visit another facility or coordinate a coffee meet-up is more stressful in how productive I feel I was for the day. It’s something I have to work on because I do enjoy talking with like-minded people often, and for me, the little chit-chats on Instagram just aren’t enough sometimes.
Fantastic Podcast(s) I listened to last week
Vigor Life Podcast: EP 132: Becoming A Better Coach, Building A Career In Fitness, and Financial Smarts w/ Mike Boyle
It’s ok if you haven’t heard of him before, but I really hope the majority of you who are reading this and in this field are familiar with Mike Boyle. Regardless of your thoughts about his training philosophies, he is one of those whose origin story is worth listening to. As young professionals evolving in the age of social media coaches, and digital marketing guru’s promising you the world without doing any work it is refreshing to hear the story of the successes and failures of a coach that has made a career in this industry.
There are so many nuggets in here. Everything from how he evaluates candidates for hire, to the importance of what he calls “the hustle factor”, learning what it means to work, putting in the hours, and the importance of financial planning, frugality, and purpose for independent coaches, and trainers.
One key takeaway from this episode is to hone in on what “one thing” you are trying to accomplish first and foremost. Then With an obsessive level of intent and grit be successful with that “one thing”. Once you’ve gotten there look for some unconventional ways to support that “one thing”.
To give you my generalized personal example: I value my independence. I am training clients in-person and online full-time 40 hours a week to be financially independent, managing someone else’s gym to save 100% of that income, and building FITLETE to maintain my independence and financial stability into the future.
SHOW NOTES: It was only a matter of time before I had Mike on the show and it was great to catch up with an industry legend and talk about how to become a great coach, getting results for clients while not getting them hurt, and how to build a successful career in fitness while being smart with your finances.
Michael Boyle is one of the foremost experts in the fields of Strength and Conditioning, Functional Training and general fitness.
