Personal Update
As much as I understand that life is ever changing it’s a refreshing mindset shift when I re-affirm myself of Heraclitus’s quote “change is the only constant in life”. I am risk-averse when I make decisions about where to spend my time and energy, but I can’t let that pull me into a tailspin of overanalyzing into decision paralysis limbo.
This week’s really cool podcast to listen to is:
The Fitness Business Podcast- Episode 441: Building a powerful fitness brand with Lisa Haggis.
This is an excellent episode about branding and marketing regardless of being directed towards fitness. However, the episode is a little piece of irony to one of the major points Lisa emphasized about brand attention. She said(in the late 8-minute mark) “to make sure to respect the time and attention that someone is giving you when consuming your content”. This was ironic to hear and be so enthusiastically supported by the host because it was after about 6 minutes of ads and pre-episode intros. 6 minutes of “nonsense” before the episode might not sound like a lot, but for a 30-minute total episode length that also closes their show with more ads, and previews for the next episode it ends up being over one-quarter of the total show time wasting the time of the listener.
I don’t want to discourage you from listening to the episode because once they start the dialogue it’s really quite good. This 6-minute intro might not annoy you as it does me. It is ironic though.
Education & Career Tools Update
I’m no market research wiz, so I use the trusted work of others to help me make some decisions and understand the behavior of people better. In 2020 I found the joint consumer spending report from two companies called The New Consumer and Coefficient. Since 2018 they have put together a report of some really easy-to-comprehend survey data around consumer behavior and recent events. I wanted to share a few insights that I thought stood out and you can review the full report if you want, it’s free!
Gen. Z and Millennials, ages 10 to 40, represent ~40% of the US population, they’re entering their prime spending decades, and over 40% say they feel most like themselves & feel more appreciated ‘online’ than ‘offline’.
Gym memberships are almost at pre-pandemic levels again.
The future of fitness still looks like a hybrid digital and gym combination. Home fitness is still the story due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing threat of new viruses, but most people who exercise want gym access.
75% of US consumers say they believe they should have the legally protected right to work remotely if technology and the nature of their work permits it.
These were the most interesting points I took from the report. I see these as saying to the evolving professional fitness industry
Online “vibes” for your business are going to be an area of focus.
there is room to fill the demand for fitness access across the spectrum of options online and offline.
gym proximity to residential areas will be similarly important to commercial areas and might be completely different offerings depending on the locations now that work from home might be a new accepted standard.
If you read the report let me know what you find interesting.
